New People
Key of C, circle of 5ths fingerpicking 4/7/2006

I wasn't born just yesterday
At 13 I've seen my share
Of buckets and barnloads of people
I think they make 'em out of air.
Mom's and Dad's are busy
It can't possibly be
That they made this many people
And it sure as sin weren't me.

Mosquitoes appear mysteriously
Like mobile homes in a tornados' path
Rabbits' got the reputation
But even they can't breed this fast.
It's got so I can't sleep at night
Afraid to close my eyes.
Afraid that I might wake up with
New people by my side.

I took a dirt road off a dirt road
Off a dirt road in Vermont
It rained and those dirt roads turned to mud:
"This is good!" I thought.
Nobody would be crazy enough
To settle down out here.
Then 3 mountain bikers, 2 backwoods hikers
And a cub scout troop appeared.

The Queen Bee has a secret
The birds have got it locked.
People must have figured it out
They must be doing more than talk.
It's got so I can't sleep at night
Afraid to close my eyes.
Afraid that I might wake up with
New People by my side.

Manhattan's got 5 million
L.A.'s got the same
London has 10 million,
Who called the English tame?
In China they count billions
But that's no mystery to me:
Like Alaska, and parts of Alabama
They've got no color T.V.!

Have you noticed that the bathroom lines
In restaurants and the mall,
Get longer every week
Kids come out of those stalls!
Traffic makes it worse: next time
You're stopped look if you dare:
Red light, it's a baby
New people everywhere.

Mosquitoes multiply mysteriously
Like mobile homes in a tornados' path.
Rabbit's got the reputation
But even they can't breed this fast.
It's got so I can't sleep at night
Afraid to close my eyes.
Afraid that I might wake up with
New people by my side.

Extra or alternate verses:

Have you noticed the bathroom lines
In restaurants and the mall,
That the womens' get longer every day
What are they doing in those stalls?
They sometimes come out looking dazed
With brand new make-up on
The next day when you wake up there's
New people on the neighbors' lawn.

Business men in suits and ties
With calculators large
Board planes and lasso S.U.V.'s
But there are no kids in their cars.
But dress 'em in loud hawaiin shirts
It's like someone changed the world
Like you opened up their 'brief' case
And out crawled boys and girls.
